Here's a late response to this post, but after a second viewing of the new Abrams Star Trek, I can say they deftly handled the canon question. In a way this film gives future sequels a wide vista to explore, allowing them to take different tacks on old tropes without raising the ire of longtime fans. Their solution was ideal.

A followup: Since posting I've received some very nice feedback, mostly from the principal players noted above. But I was told of a factual error: Shawn Pearce did not sing with the Dreamers during our probationary period; he was working in a university production of "Godspell". He did join in during our first full membership year (and remained a force in the acappella scene at PSU for over eight more years!)
I would also be remiss if I didn't mention one other name - Chris Goffredo. Of all the Dreamers I sang with at the very beginning, ChrisGo had seemed to vanish from sight for me and others in the group after graduation. Kevin and Doug I had visited once (each) between graduation and the 20th, and Marc could be looked up on IMDB, and we all followed Paul's post-PSU exploits with DaVinci's Notebook. But we weren't even sure where ChrisGo was at this point. So lest he thinks I was making a conspicuous omission, since he was at the Diner on that Saturday night, you weren't in this narrative for a very stupid, silly reason: I didn't want to spell your name wrong! I didn't have the definitive spelling in front of me as I was composing so I erred on discretion. But let me state categorically that ChrisGo is as vital to the history of this group as Kevin or Doug or Lou or Paul or anyone else: He will always be our voice for "Unchained Melody" or "Goodnight Sweetheart". As the kids say: Big mad props to ChrisGo!

I stand by all my arguments in this article, excepting the very last one. USC victory:38-24 (and it wasn't that close). Damn PSU!

For relantel: Normally I don't delve into politics, or other "hot button" things for the blog, but this was just something rattling around the ol' noggin. While the target was polls, the idea I was really going after was that this kind of thing may be causing a sort of "groupthink" approach to elections: That the herd kind of drifts to where the trend goes. The optimist in me hopes that this drift is due to individuals setting their minds due to their own reflection and values, while the pessimist in me seems to believe that people are too distracted or uncaring to bother having a considered opinion, and that they tend to follow the herd, which trails the carrot of media-projected winners (oh, and the kid in me thinks its crunchy and delicious! To borrow a Berke Breathed line: "See, we're back to the crapola!")

What a refreshing change it would be without polls - though given the actual result, perhaps a part of me is relieved that I did not have a lot more invested in the losing campaign since it looked like the end result was what was going to happen. I may not like the result, but at least I was mentally prepared for it.

I am one of those out there that was public about whom I supported, at least on Buried Planet (hence the pingback since I felt it deserved comment) - what I was not prepared for, though, was the complete shift in Virginia.

Ah, the saddest dumbest choice in marketing. Go from a sure asset in the Chessie Cat to an entity known just by the letters CSX. The holding company came into being in 1980, with control of the Seaboard and Chessie System. 1986 was the critical year that the old paint started to disappear in earnest, though one can still find mostly unrepainted locomotives out there. CSX broke my heart when the State of Virginia sold the RF&P to them in 1991.

(I didn't get my fraternal nickname of "Chattanooga" for nothing!)

You should've asked me. My dad worked for ALCOA corporate in Pgh. for 19 years as a rail rate analyst. I knew about the Chessie cat as a pre-teen.
